The idea for the creation of Igbobini Diocese started in 1977 but was not created until 1984. In preparation for the creation of the diocese, the conference of Methodist Church Nigeria granted Ode-Aye and Idanre churches ‘A’ circuit status in 1977, in the same year, at the conference of the church held at Enugu between 6th and 16th of September 1977, the decision for the creation of the diocese was agreed comprising of three circuits; Igbobini, Ode-Aye and Idanre circuits, but was ratified in 1978 and Rt. Rev. Micheal Oladipupo Osinuga was made the auxiliary bishop, who was responsible to the Bishop of Ilesa.
The diocese was finally created in 1984 comprising of five circuits; Igbobini (1947), Ode-Aye (1977), Idanre (1977), Okitipupa (1980) and Irele (1982). The diocese was inaugurated on the 5th of February 1984 with Rt. Rev. Olutayo Solomon Ayinla Akinbo as the second auxiliary bishop and as the first substantive bishop of the diocese. But now, Idanre circuit is no more under the diocese of Igbobini but under Owo diocese. The diocese continued to grow since then and even now has eight ciruits and a missionary area, namely; Igbobini, Ode-Aye, Okitipupa, Irele, Ondo, Ilepete, Idepe & Ilutitun circuits and Igbotako missionary area.
The Diocese in collaboration with Owo and Edo-Delta dioceses became an Archdiocese in 2013 with Most Rev. A.A Akindeko as the first Archbishop.
